I'm going to discuss something that could get 'deep' and more posts will follow from this topic. Since I have begun to live a more natural lifestyle, I pay closer attention to the ingredients in products and also in the food I purchase. I have mentioned before that I don't use the conventional personal care products that you buy off the shelf at Walmart. I read a book a few years ago that opened my eyes to what is in the things we put on and into our bodies. In the book, the author mentions that we don't know what we don't know. I had never thought about the ingredients in the things we put on our skin, let alone what I eat. So it was shocking to read about the ingredients and the harm it can cause to our bodies. I'm not sure if it's just me, or if we are all opening our eyes to the things that we use on a daily basis.
There are so many toxic chemicals in the products we use; from what we use to clean our homes with, the makeup we use, the food we eat and the list goes on and on. There is a reason that Pine Sol is so incredibly strong, yet has a fresh lemony scent. There is also a reason you may see a 'dollar section' at the store with lotions, hand soaps, shampoo, etc. Have you ever looked at the ingredients of those things?! It makes perfect sense, to me at least, to question some of these things that we cannot pronounce or that are known hormone disruptors and who knows what else they are doing to our bodies. You would think in the 21st century in the United States that things would be more regulated than what they are, but that is not the case. Since having read this book along with many other things about the toxicity of our environment today, I choose to research and sometimes even make some of the things I use own my body each day. I am still on this journey as it is a process. There are times when I buy dishwashing tablets because I have yet to perfect a homemade version that works! I will not give up though!

They have an app you can download on your phone that allows you to search food items as well as products that will give you a rating based on the ingredients in the particular item. I used this app earlier today in fact, on sunscreen. The rating was seven, which is too high for me, so I just set it right back on the shelf.

In my next post, I will share some of the things that I make myself. Who knew with two ingredients and a cotton ball, I can take my eye makeup off!
