We are smack dab in the middle of cold and flu season, and it seems everyone is sick with something!! I firmly believe that eating a well-balanced diet, taking the right supplements our body needs and being proactive about our health are vital in staying healthy in today's world of cheap, fast and easy. I would love to tell you that my fridge is full of vibrantly colored fruits and vegetables, that I never eat fast food and that we eat most of our meals at home. While the last is true, the other is not. Life is about balance, right? You're talking to the pregnant girl with a serious sweet tooth. I mean, I could eat a bowl of ice cream every night, but I refrain from doing so. I want to teach my son that desserts are ok, in moderation. Now, no judgment if you indulge in a bowl of Blue Bell most nights; I'm not your accountability partner.
I try my best not to buy junk food – even healthier versions of things; I think we should still be aware of the ingredients they put into them. I buy ice cream, popcorn, chips, but I also shop almost exclusively at Aldi, where they have their brands of food often found without many of the ingredients the name brands have. We also buy fresh milk weekly at a local farm and our son LOVE's it.
Buying the cheap, easy stuff can be tempting. We need to remember when we put what our bodies need in; we get good out. I think when we focus on what is important to our families and us, that becomes our priority and it reflects on how we live and what we do. Eating and planning healthy meals for my family while not breaking the bank, is a very doable thing. It takes planning and determination and resistance from the temptations that are easily available to us these days.
Try as we may, there are times we get sick, and I sometimes feel like a failure when that happens or when my son comes down with something. I just purchased more of my prenatal vitamins and probiotics, as well as probiotics for my son. These things along with my Elderberry syrup and essential oils are staples at my house. I think my husband finally sees that by doing these things daily, I'm trying to keep us all well and out of the doctor's offices.
What are the struggles you find with eating and trying to stay healthy?
